Does DJI FPV Have Follow-me Mode?

The DJI FPV is a fantastic drone capable of long-range flights and reaching high speeds. But to use it for vlogging and some custom b-rolls, we should look towards Active Track with follow-me mode.

Does DJI FPV Have an Active Track with follow-me mode?

Unfortunately, the DJI FPV drone lacks Active Track or Follow Me mode. This drone also lacks any intelligent functions to help the drone pilot capture immersive recordings.

This being said, there’s a little bit more information to share with you regarding Active Track and follow-me mode, why the DJI FPV doesn’t have it, and what else you need to know about any intelligent functions on this drone.

But before, let’s have a look over the DJI FPV specs, shall we?

What are Active Track and Follow-me modes?

The Active Track is an autonomous DJI function that will allow some drones to track a subject with the help of the camera, GPS positioning and sensors, object detection, and other intelligent features.

Follow-me mode segment is part of the Active Track, and there are two functions to mention: Trace and Parallel.

  • Trace will follow the subject from behind at a specific distance set by the pilot. This will use anti-collision sensors to avoid obstacles in the drone’s path.
  • Parallel will fly the drone on the side of the subject, where the drone will face the pilot but will fly left or right. This is riskier if the drone doesn’t have side avoidance sensors.

But unfortunately, the DJI FPV drone doesn’t have Trace, Parallel, or Active Track in general.

Why doesn’t the DJI FPV drone have Active Track or Follow-me mode?

This may be related to the fact that the DJI FPV is an FPV drone meant to be flown primarily in manual (acro) mode.

Having normal and sports modes on the DJI FPV are only perks. They work brilliantly but are not optimized to work as with a standard GPS drone.

And there are no FPV drones existent to fly in acro mode with any follow-me features.

Is there any way to add Active Track on DJI FPV? Will follow-me mode be added to the DJI FPV drone in the future?

No. Unfortunately, there are no ways to add a follow-me mode to the DJI FPV drone, neither by camera detection nor the GPS follow-me mode.

The DJI FPV Drone should be capable of supporting GPS follow-me because it has an autonomous return to home, which works incredibly well and is able to get a fixed GPS position to the meter.

Moreover, the DJI FPV has frontal anti-collision sensors that may benefit from the follow-me mode.

But it is unlikely that the DJI FPV drone, same as DJI Avata, to have now nor ever any updates to introduce a follow-me feature.

What other drones should you consider with follow-me mode?

DJI has a comprehensive list of standard GPS drones with the follow-me mode. Nowadays, more and more drones are being released with Active Track, even if they have or do not have any avoidance sensors.

DJI Mini 3 Pro is an excellent example. It has a follow-me mode with Active Track and frontal, backward, and downward sensors.

The DJI Air 2S drone is another brilliant drone with Active Track and a follow-me feature.

But all these drones are standard GPS drones that are not capable of flying the same as an FPV drone.

Will DJI release any FPV drones with follow-me mode in the future?

It is hard to say if this will ever happen. DJI will likely release more FPV drones in the future, but it will be unlikely for any of these drones to have a follow-me mode.

FPV drones are meant mainly to be flown in manual mode, acrobatically, and racing, regardless of DJI or not DJI.

Does DJI Avata have a follow-me mode?

To quickly answer this, same as DJI FPV, the DJI Avata does not have any follow-me mode or Active Track in general.

It is also unlikely that Avata will get any firmware updates with follow-me mode.

Please also remember that compared to the DJI FPV, the DJI Avata doesn’t have any avoidance sensors, which are generally very beneficial for the follow-me feature.

Are there any FPV drones existing on the market with a follow-me mode?

As far as I know, no FPV drones exist with a follow-me feature.

But nowadays, many standard GPS drones are becoming compatible with FPV goggles that may be beneficial for having an immersive experience while flying with the headset on.

Still, neither of these drones can use any intelligent functions if we relate to drones compatible with DJI Goggles Integra and DJI RC Motion 2 when flying with the headset on.

Thinking from a content creator side, a follow-me feature in any drone, whether based on GPS location or image recognition software from camera or sensors, should be considered a priority because much can be done with it.
